  7. What wonderful inspiration and re-energiser for are continous battle to live on the roadside in our cobdale buccaneer (crystal knobs!) and pilot showmans live-in van. Showmans may not be gypsy but its still a great british home! Please take care, be nice to see you in the layby some time. Ethan, North Hants.

  8. Hi

Well at long last i have managed to trace the make of mt old family caravan. It must have been a Vickers Lonsdale.

My Dad bought it around 1959 new and we still had it in perfect condition in 1979. Never any water ingress poplems and the interier was like new.

We towed it with a Rover 90 it was a heavy van i remember.

Dad always commented how it was a gypsy style van with fantastic interior cabnet made with a top beam construction, we all loved it and it has many happy memories of holidays in Devon, Norfolk and Scotland.

When we were all away from home Dad had not used it in a few years and offered it to any one of us but I was then a very poor student ( still am) and could not afford to tow it down to Devon wher I was living Dad gave it away. It had lived on a site in Yorkshire for 15 years in Topcliff by the river nr the Black Bull pub.

It was two tone outside with leaded windows a beautiful van.

I have recently bought a Bailey Senitor and am waiting to head out again on the open road if I can stay ahead of the ballifs.

Would anyone know how much a van like that would have cost I seen to remember Dad saying it was around £600 in 1958/59 not sure what that would be in todays money??

Anyway a great site to see again the style and shape of the graetest caravan ever built!

    Peter

  13. For Susanna Stockings. I havent seen it myself, (you probably have these) but I believe there are good photo's of Muggy and Betsy in the book about their son Jimmy "On the cobbles" . I was told Muggy was famous for being THE gambling man at Epsom, betting non- stop all day, and a great character.

    cheers. Ken

  14. Hi (is it Maria?)........W.Star no: 257 was built in July 1979 for Mr Rodney Smith and it cost £23,500. Rodney sold it on a couple of years later in the 'slump' of 'flash' trailers for a lot less !!!!

    Hope this helps.

    Ken.

  15. Hello there,

I want to first congradulate the creator of the site as he/she has made a most wonderful job!

I was hoping someone would be able to point me in the right direction, i have recently purchased an 1979 Westmorland Star and was wanting to find a bit of back ground info on it. The previous owner could not shed alot of light on the matter. If possible i was wanting to find out who was the first owner of it ? and how much they paid back in 1979.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much apprieciated .....or if anyone knows anything about it again it would be much apprieciated.

The cerial number is 257779 and it was made in 1979

    Thank you in advanced

    M.Welch

  16. Thanks Shaun. Glad you like the site, an interesting posting !! I will email you shortly.

    Ken.

  17. Hi,

Excellent site! Our Grandad used to sell Vickers, Roma & Buccaneers many years ago & brings back good memories!

It took me years to find a Vickers, and we have had this now for some 10 years with a view to bringing back to it's former glory. Not that it's too bad, but just wish we had the time to do it!

If I want to advertise, what do I do? Haven't quite decided yet but it might be worth someone having the enjoyment. Looks similar to the Vickers on your Home Page but blue inserts. Inside still has plastic on some of the seats.

Await to hear from you, but am also trying to find some adverts & piccies from the 60's & 70's to add for you.

    Regards,

    Shaun Ennis

  18. hi dean

i was trying to buy your trailer back in 2006 but the email i had for yu was wrong,i was well annoyed as she looked a beauty

you sent me lots of pictures

it was you who told me about riley and VDL trailers, was on a message board somewhere on the net

youre dead right about the roma being a better trailer than the tabbert !

    thanks

    dan

  20. What a great website, have enjoyed looking at all of the pictures and photographs of all of the caravans and lorries.

I was born in Manchester in, England (1955) and immigrated to Canada in 1975 and now reside in Toronto, Ontario, my family purchased a brand new Willerby Majestic Caravan (22'-0") to celebrate my birth. We had the caravan on a caravan site (Ockwells) on Fleetwood Road near Blackpool, over the years we had many many happy holidays there creating many wonderful memories.

I have been facinated by caravans ever since, especially vintage British ones and love to collect as much information, brochures, literature, pictures and photographs that I can get my hands on.

I look forward to many many return visits to your website and to all of the addiwional pictures and information you post.

I must commend you on a job well done in creating such an interesting and fascinating website.

    Regards,

    Glyn Waterfall

  21. ive looked at this site every few months for a while and was just shocked to see my trailer included in modern romas 5. its the tan and cream bunks at the bottom of the page. i cant think exactly when i took these photos but presume it was when it was for sale in 2006. we advertised it in benidorm where we had pulled it 1800 miles from nottinghamshire.we then moved from benidorm to italy 2000 miles towing this 26ft trailer,it took us 4 days ! we sold it and it is now on a residential camp in pisa, italy.ive now got a tabbert and i now realise what a mistake it was to sell it. our roma was built in 2001 and never had a scratch inside or out. cant say the same about our 2 year old tabbert.!

  22. i loved all the trailers and lorrys iv got a carlight 12ft and a morris oxford look forwards to see some of these moters and trailers at cambridge fair is ther eny one that nos wene the northamptonshire bedford show is on please.

Has the original burner, lights, windows etc. It,s warped on one side and needs a bit of reconditioning. I was wandering if you new anywhere I could get it fixed so that I can sell it on. Or where they buy old trailers to recondition to sell.

If anyone can help that would be great. Thank you..... P.s. Your website is ace. There's loads of wicked pics.

  33. Hi everyone, thanks for the comments and kind words, much appreciated ! Nobody is more pleased than me that the site has 'taken off' and is enjoyed by so many people. Its great to see so many trailers 'coming out of the woodwork' and such fine ones too............ Im very grateful to all the people who have lent me personal pictures and made me welcome in their trailers and homes, and to Dan Sullivan for the photo's of the trailers he restores so well and always lets me have copies of for the site. And Gary, when youre stopping down Romsey way in a few weeks time I hope you both have time to come and have a cup of tea up in the Roma !!

    kushti bokt. Ken.

  34. hello geraldine, just to say i also come from an all military background, and have taken to the road as a lot of people from military backgrounds have done and probably as we never put down for too long, and now living the life having done deals on the way, enjoying our vickers chrome trailer, marrying into a kent romany family in the near future,oh! and baby on the way!,it is a real pleasure to see the old trailers i used to see falling to pieces now proudly displayed as they once were,at heath common fair, wakefield ,vickers trailers all polished doin the palmistry, ,.also it makes me sad to see the traditional travellers places built on or turned into roundabouts like at rothwell in the late 70,s up leeds road, the chrome trailers with their smoking chimneys a proud site once, now gone forever.one thing that pleases me though, once any one has lived on the road or still are,it will never ever leave you,and you wont meet better people as travelling people whatever their backgrounds, thanks to this website all generations can take pride in the stories and pictures.thanks again to ken and everyone who have shared their old pictures.and heres to more in the future too.good luck.

  35. Hiya! I am Romany and have only holidayed in a stationary caravan and live in a nice terrace home and never much advertise I am romany . The caravan are stupendous. Has anyone ever seen the lovely painted caravan in the Glasgow Transport museum. it is beautiful. I am from an all Military background despite romany blood.

  36. Hi ken have just logged on to this website by accident, Ime so glad that i have as it has maid my day, such lovaly trailers that i remember as a small child ! It seems such a shame that thay dont make them like thay used to. I keep Telling my husband that i would like to get an old time roma but he always moans and mentions the weight of them, I personally dont care says I but he still moans. the problem with all of the newer traillers is that thay are so light that every thing in them tends to break so easy especally when you have as many young children like myself, I also think its a lot harder to get stopping places nowerdays esspecially for the bigger traillers you always get hounded from place to place, I think it would be really nice also if our children all grew to no there old roots as a lot of travelling children are being brought up in houses and are losing ther identaty it seems a lot of them have lost the traditionall ways of the Gypsy and Traveller and just like the waggon we will all be thing of the past , and I feel its a creddit to pepole like yourself and others who have websites like yours to keep us all in touch with our past, pressent, our wonderfull future so for any youngsters reading this remember who you are be prowed of were you come from and most of all stick together and support each other becouse all of you are our future and herritage!!! tell others travellers abought this web page , and remember you cant get rid of a good thing good luck and best wishes GypsieT17 xxx

  37. Hi everyone, lets hope this weather holds for Stow Fair next week !!

  43. What a great site. So many excellent photos of trailers and people.

I wonder if anyone can help me - my father's people travelled doing agricultural work round Surrey and Sussex in the 1900s, long time ago I know, but settled and went into farming and married non Gypsies and we've been in houses ever since. They possibly took the surname from Catsfield in Sussex.

I have no clue what their name was previous to this or where they came from. I've only got my ancestry and the look of my great great grandfather's people left to be proud of.

    Anyone any clues or knowledge?

  44. Trevor. Thanks for your interesting message. Dordi, I bet you regret that flash Vickers !!! but thats life isnt it. Glad you enjoy the site and the memories and best of luck with the waggon. Keep looking.

    Ken.

  45. well this site brought back memorys, fantastic, i married a fairground traveler, and our first proper trailer was an astral luxitrailer, about 1984 so the trailer was old at that time, every time you shut the front door the curtain pelmets fell on your head, these trailers were built to a price, i think the frames were made out of pallet wood, but the good thing about them was the end bedroom, i also bought the showmans tk bedford, 4 pot engine with box body ex hales cakes nr bristol, £800 the lot, then when i was traveling in south wales there was a trailer man at newport who used to sell the flash trailers, he had a single axle vickers tucked in the corner that i wanted to buy but it was out of my price range then about £1200,, about 6 months past i was going past his yard and i saw the trailer still in the corner so i pulled in, the trailer had been broken into , all the big cut glass door mirrors had been chored, and the sky lights broken, the chap said he had just been paid out on the insurance, and if i wanted the trailer for £150 i could have it, as long as i took it straight away, i knocked his hand off with £120 thats all i had leaving me with £5 for petrol and the toll for over the severn bridge, i coupled the trailer behind my mk1 twin wheel transit van , when i got to the toll booth at the severn bridge the weight of the trailer nearly pushed me through the rising barrier, to much for the old transits brakes , anyway i got the trailer back to the yard in bristol , back in 1993 i needed a trailer for me and my boy, there was a place just north of wolverhampton loads of german trailers, , there was a 23ft hobby in the bargain basment also a twin wheel vickers with all the chrome and mirrors the man gave me a choice £2000 which ever one i wanted, both the same price, i only had a renault traffic so i didnt have a choice , it had to be the hobby the vickers weighs about 3tonn plus i would never been able to tow it, bloody palace on wheels it was, look at the price of them now, now i live in a brick built box, but for the past 6 months i have built myself a bowtop wagon, i will put some pictures on the romany caravan sight soon, when its finished , just cutting through the canvas to put the chimminy pipe out, its been a labour of love, but its keeping me sane in this crappy nanny state country we all now live in,, i am wearing my yellow jacket ,saftey boots and helmet as i write this, just in case somebody lights up a fag, kushti bok and god bless all of the good memories in all of our lives

  46. Thanks Shaun. Ive sent you an email. cheers.

    Ken

    Ken.

  56. Hi, came across your site whilst trying to get some info how the 07 appleby fair was, have not been up from Derbyshire for the past five year but had visited the fair for 15 year previouse. I used to tow an astral this had a great interior and after a good few years proved to be far too heavy for my towing vehicle.I have always been interetsed in gypsy caravans both horse drawn and the romany trailers ,try to keep the site going as it gives me great pleasure and brings back alot of memories,

    Regards, Mike.

  57. Hi Ken Its David Moss Just wanted to know if the romany roots musium is on at chichester this year.I would like to take my old carlite again,Iv also just finished my old bucaneer.I will send you some pictures of them soon.If you could reply thanks

  59. Hi Ken,

My last one did work so I'll try again. Thanks for the positive image you are giving to our folk. There are some strange concepts of our people in Australia. Its a pleasure to point people to your site.

I don't get on to the site as much as I would like. Did anyone identifie the ladies in the very first 'fer ol' times dake' photo. The one with the group of ladies and children standing in the front a lady with a dixie on the fire and two vardos in the background. Ithink you said 1928 at Epsom.

    Cheers, Kathi / Australia

  60. hi Ken,

  63. Hi from Houston Texas

I have really enjoyed looking at the pictures of the older trailers on your site. The old English trailers are so much more interesting than the old American ones. Not that many of the older American trailers have survived. They were out of favor some years ago so most were left to rot where they sat. It seems that there has recently been a renewed interest in these old trailers here, so if you can find one from the 1950's or early 1960's they want a small fortune for it. Interestingly enough I now work for an RV dealership here in Texas. www.pplmotorhomes.com

  64. hi i have just looked at your site and its amazing i owned a buccaneer caravan a few years ago but unfortunatley never got to use it as i came off the back of the van on the motorway as it was being towed home. it hit the central crash barrier carrierd across three lanes and ended up about half a mile away on the hard shoulder. All four corners had gone but not a single mirror had been damaged and the only mess inside was the coal bucket for the fire had fallen over.I was devastated when i saw it we moved it down to a farm to store it ,the guy who low loaded it used to work for buccaneer years ago and told us whoever had ordered it new must have been very wealthy as it had three large bands of crome all the way round it was scrapped in the end for 50 pounds i have relly enjoyed looking at your site thank you

  65. Lisa, glad you enjoy the site. As to a book, several of the contributors have suggested I do one so watch this space !!

    Ken

  66. Hello there Ken, what a wonderful site you have. I spent hours looking through all your beautiful pictures the other night, in fact its your fault im very tired and have a crook back! only teasing. Its so great to see what growing interest there is in these amazing caravans which only a few years ago seemed to be out of favour and deemed too old fashioned and gaudy. What a great job some of the people on your site have made of restoring some of them. I have to say that my fav pics are the old ones with families living in the trailers at the time when they where new. Will you be thinking of publishing a book that we can all look at in our leisure??? Kushti bok, Lisa Ebert - somerset

    Ken.

  69. hi ken was really pleased to see this website with the pictures of the old westmoreland stars and many old trailers and ford d series wagons, i owned & lived in a buccaneer for a short while ihave a few photos of us stopping in a layby outside york with a wellknown travelling man by the name of andrew winters otherwise known as (old wints) sadly now passed away. they were great times for me cutting up old wagons for export and burning cable etc driving round buying & selling anything. That man could ave sold sand to the arabs! i will try find some photos and email them to you! i also remember as a child meeting a man called cocker smith & family who used to stop down the lanes neear boroughbridge selling horses at the good old barnaby fair.

A credit to yourself for creating this website many thanks Martyn.

  70. Ever since I was a very little boy the sight of these beautiful chromey trailers stirred me up. It seemed they represented an exciting life of nomadic wandering and freedom from nonsense rules. At age 35 I bought my first proper trailer after living in a tourer for years. It was a Cobdale 23 footer, much stainless steel and cut glass lupin mirrors, three chandeliers, white woodgrain formica, woodburner and those exotic tall skylights like bedouin tents. The travellers who I bought it from also sold me two thick stainless water cans too. I felt like a prince ! I bought some large and small milk churns and stainless steel bowl and bucket.

My trailer was a 1974 model and sadly it slowly deteriorated until I had to sell it to a chappie from Salisbury who did them up. He really knew about these heavy old beauties and told me before seeing it where it leaked ! Hopefully it`s back to it`s best now. I`m looking for another trailer now after living `settled` for some years. If only some enterprising caravan maker could be persuaded to produce a lighter but chromey and glamorous trailer to replace the hoards of German lookalikes that are the mode now. As long as you could tow it with a Transit it would be a winner. Is there anything on the road these days that stirs a youngster`s heart to thoughts of travelling apart from the wonderful old Westmornin`s, Vickers etc? I still have my water cans, milk churns , wanderlust and original heart ! Lets hit the road ! Thank goodness for you, Ken.

  71. Hi just fantastic they certainly dont make them to this quality anymore as I am renovating a Abbey GT van at the moment and the rot is tremendous and the materials cheap and nasty and it is only 8 year old keep up the good work.

  72. Hi everyone. Check out Albert Scamp's pics to see a picture of Alberts boy, Albert, who has just turned professional boxer and has won every one of his fights so far.

  73. Thankyou Shaun, I appreciate your comments. Hope you become another 'regular' !! cheers. Ken.

  74. hi ken just wanted to compliment you on an absolutely fantastic site!!!! im 36 but remember these trailers from my childhood.I thought id never see some of them again! my parents had an aaro travella and a soverighn in the late 70's early 80's.im into german trailers now but im having many hours of pleasure looking at your site and will be a regular visitor in future.nice picture of your buccaneer hooked up to your L200 by the way! good luck.

  75. Hi Jack. Thats a pretty little Buccaneer, you got any better pictures of it? Glad you liked seeing the pic's of both trailers. Cheers. Ken

  76. hi just looking through your pictures and was surprised to see a buccaneer i know own,its the little 18,feet one with the old curtains in and the airiel on the ground.i bought the trailler last year from a gorger man in dorset,i am now looking to sell it.i also reconise one of the vickers on here it was my dads .its the one with the two plates in the front window and you can see a breeze block building to the side, great to see them here,

  77. by the way my coment was meant to say the 60's 70's and 80's

  78. hi there

found this site purely by chance and couldnt believe it ,the site of some of the trailers brought back so many memories both good and bad .over the years i have had a few of the makes u mention plus some not and we travelled the length and breadth of the country(scotland)your right the 70's and 60's were a much better era for the travellar with more and more of the country folks intervention with our way of life most of us either live in houses or council run sites and the tourer can be parked up the driveway to come out in the summer i long for the old days when life was much more simpler coz even after our culture and traditions are all but diminished the flatties still dont accept us

  79. Hello Eli.

Nice to know you enjoyed the site. It seems to have brought back good memories to lots of people and a couple have even seen old photo's of relatives that they havent had pictures of themselves which is nice.

  84. Hello,

I traveled Britain a lot in the eighties, in my Westmoreland Star, then a lighter Astral Ranger, both decorated trailers, and solid. Does anyone who visits here remember me?

I left Britain in 1989, and spent time in Eastern Europe, until 1994, when I got the opportunity to visit the United States, and have been here ever since. I travel now in a 40 foot trailer, converted to my use, no water inside, with wood stove, and cut glass. This is a strange country for a Rom - they are ignorant of the prejudice that sent me from both Britain and Europe - they think it quaint to know me, without condemning me falsely.

Thank you for creating this website, The old trailers are my kind of trailer, without them life is so bare, the modern trailers don't awake my soul like the chrome and cut glass. I would like to see such a trailer here in the United States. Anyway, I will visit this site regularly, to see the pictures, and dream of my life, years ago.

    Eli.

  85. The pic's of Alberts latest model are on the 'sales/wants' page, another fine replica !!! take a look.

    good luck albert

  87. Davie, glad you are enjoying the site. Don't think there is much fear of it turning into a 'collectors place' !!! As Ive said before, it can only stay 'fresh' with the help of other people lending photo's, it will be a shame if the site gets 'stagnant' like so many others do once the material is 'used up', so any pictures are much appreciated, doesnt have to be 'flash' trailers............anything of interest is welcome.................also if anyone wants to email me their memories or experiences from the past 'on the road' I will type them up and put them on !!

    Ken.

  88. its abuot time somebody put a sensible web site on the internet about gypsie trailers i just hope it dosnt turn in to an auction/sale site for classic collectors and sticks to what gypsie folk want .. talkin of good old times and pals past with pictures bringing back memories, thank for this great site

  94. travelled for 8 years in various boats around south west mostly, developed an intrest in vardo and related things, just getting into trailers, lovely site, keep up the good work.

  95. Although not being a 'traditional traveller' I enjoyed your site, especially the pages explaining the history of various trailer types , some of which were later bought by my travelling mates at knock down prices , which seeing how the 'oldies' market has now revived is probably regretted by their ex-owners !

    cheers, dave.

  96. Happy New Year to all.
