HERE WE HAVE SOMETHING TOTALLY UNIQUE I WOULD IMAGINE !
A TRAILER FROM 1957 WITH STRIKING AMERICAN CAR STYLE REAR FINS. STILL WITH ALL ITS ORIGINAL FEATURES, INCLUDING A FLAVEL GAS COOKER, FRIDGIDAIRE REFRIDGERATOR, COLLARO BAKELITE RECORD TURNTABLE, PINK & CREAM LEATHER BUNKS AND PARQUET FLOOR, CURVED & CUT WINDOWS LONG BEFORE A WESTMORLAND STAR WAS DREAMED OF !!
THIS VAN IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A COMPLETE RESTORATION.........................

THIS TRAILER WAS NOT BUILT FOR A SHOWMAN BUT FOR A ROMANY MAN
MR WISDOM SMITH, SON OF NUNKY SMITH. IT WAS INSPIRED BY AN EARLIER TRAILER THAT HAD BEEN BUILT IN WIGAN IN 1953 FOR MR JIMMY SMITH BUT THAT ONE DIDNT HAVE THE 'CAR FINS'........ THIS TRAILER WAS ORDERED BY WISDOM SMITH WHEN HE WAS GETTING MARRIED AND WAS BUILT BY A COACHBUILDER ON AN INDUSTRIAL ESTATE IN SLOUGH. THE FURNITURE WAS BUILT BY A SPECIALIST COMPANY AT BROCKHURST. NEW IT COST ABOUT £3000 WHICH WAS A HUGE SUM IN 1957. AS CAN BE IMAGINED IT WAS A 'HEAD TURNER' BACK THEN.

Many thanks to Warren Burton & Mr's Dean, Noah and Nelson Smith for the above information.

  3. It would be fantastic if Nelson or Wisdom could get me some pictures or information on some of the internal fixtures and fittings mysteries. I need info on the hi fi system, blinds, dining table position and fixing methods and the type of stove that was fitted etc etc. I want to make sure this restoration is 100% correct as per Wisdoms original specifications. Any photos of this waggon would be greatly appreciated. As this waggon must've been a show stopper in its day, there must be loads of pictures? At the moment it's a bit like doing a jigsaw without the box lid to go by!!
    Thanks in advance. Kevin.

  4. Big thanks to Nelson Smith for giving the details of the trailer, Nelson is first cousin to Wisdom and remembers the van well. Also to warren and Hoolie Burton who 'put me right' at first, and Dean who contacted me after and put me on to his uncle Noah and grandad Nelson. Thanks.
